Throughout history, some robberies have confused investigators, attracted worldwide attention, and left behind questions that remain unanswered. In several cases, valuable objects disappeared without a clear explanation, while the people responsible managed to escape justice. Here are five fascinating cases that demonstrate how difficult it can be to solve a major crime.

1. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist (1990)

In March 1990, two men disguised as police officers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the United States. They claimed that they were responding to a disturbance and persuaded the security guards to let them inside. Once in the building, they tied up the guards and stole 13 works of art, including paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. The stolen pieces were worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Despite decades of investigation, none of the artworks has been recovered. The museum still displays empty frames where some of the missing paintings once hung.

2. The Antwerp Diamond Heist (2003)

In February 2003, a group of highly organised criminals broke into a heavily secured diamond centre in Antwerp, Belgium. The building was protected by multiple security systems, including cameras, sensors and locked doors. Nevertheless, the thieves managed to enter the vault and steal diamonds, gold and other valuable items. Investigators later arrested several suspects, and one of them was convicted. However, much of the stolen property was never recovered. The robbery became famous because the criminals appeared to have planned their actions in extraordinary detail.

3. The Banco Central Burglary (2005)

In August 2005, criminals in Fortaleza, Brazil, carried out an unusual bank robbery. Rather than breaking through the main entrance, they rented a nearby property and secretly dug a tunnel leading towards the bank's vault. The tunnel was approximately 80 metres long and carefully constructed to avoid attracting attention. The thieves reportedly removed around 164 million Brazilian reais, equivalent to tens of millions of US dollars at the time. Although several suspects were arrested, only part of the money was recovered. The case demonstrated that criminals could exploit weaknesses in physical security without directly attacking a building.

4. The Harry Winston Diamond Robbery (2008)

In December 2008, several robbers entered the Harry Winston jewellery store in Paris, France. Some of them were disguised as women, which helped them approach the store without immediately attracting suspicion. They threatened staff and escaped with jewellery and precious stones worth approximately €80 million. French authorities eventually arrested suspects and recovered some of the stolen valuables. Nevertheless, the incident remains one of the most remarkable jewellery robberies in modern European history. Its success initially raised concerns about how easily expensive goods could be removed from a prestigious store.

5. The Hatton Garden Heist (2015)

During the Easter weekend in 2015, a group of older criminals broke into a safety deposit facility in London's Hatton Garden district. They used specialised equipment to penetrate a thick concrete wall and gain access to deposit boxes containing jewellery, cash and other valuables. The stolen property was estimated to be worth millions of pounds. Although the operation initially appeared successful, investigators eventually identified and arrested several members of the group. The case was not entirely unsolved, but questions about the whereabouts of some missing valuables remained. It also demonstrated that careful planning does not guarantee a successful escape from justice.

Conclusion

These five robberies illustrate the different methods criminals have used to overcome security systems, from disguises and underground tunnels to specialised tools and detailed planning. Although investigators have solved parts of several cases, the recovery of stolen property has often proved much more difficult. Ultimately, these incidents remind us that even sophisticated security measures can be defeated when criminals identify weaknesses and exploit them.
